The Greatest of These is Love (A patient’s story from Canilla)
Recently, I had the opportunity to fill in for our rehabilitation promoter in Canilla. He is taking exams in hopes of starting medical school next year. The first patient I worked with has battled venous status ulcers for over a year. (Don’t worry, I won’t share any pictures.) It got so bad we thought she would need an amputation. However, the doctor suggested one final treatment option.
Despite living with her family, she seemed to be a bother and nuisance to them. I’ve been told some family members have plugged their nose and basically thrown food at her when the wounds were infected and had a slight odor. When she requested money to pay for some of her procedures, she was told there was none, despite the fact she sold her land before moving in with them. It is a difficult situation.
Last year, the entire Mariposita’s team, even those not involved in therapy, took turns spending time with her each day. They ensured she kept her leg elevated, did her exercises, and received her daily dressing changes. It got her over the hump.
The wounds have closed more, but still have a ways to go for complete healing. Today, we encouraged her to walk as normally as possible with weight through both of her legs to increase the movement and strength in her affected ankle. However, what we’ve discovered and been reminded of is the most important thing we can give her is love. Love can heal a broken heart and an open wound.
