Ana Cristina first came to ASELSI in the early 2000’s because of her spina bifida, a malformation of the nerves in the back causing various levels of paralysis in the legs. Sharon Harvey, nurse and co-founder of ASELSI, helped her get the medical treatment and surgeries she needed. When we started the physical therapy program in 2005, she received some therapy as able. Unlike some of the other children, she couldn’t come as regularly because of where she lived. However, the team helped her with what we could. The picture below is when we provided her with her first walker.

Ana Cristina just has one of those personalities that captures your heart. Despite the tendency to keep people with disabilities hidden or out of the public education system and all facets of community life, she has always been an active part of her family and community. She has had the opportunity to study, despite her physical difficulties walking. Today, she uses a wheelchair to get around.

In September, as I watched some of the Independence Day Parades, I was delighted to see Ana participating in the marching band for her high school. What joy to see someone with a disability accepted and participating in the activities of not only her school, but also of society. It even made the local news, as you can see from the first picture above.

I pray that as we expand into the communities next year, more people with disabilities will find their place of participation in community activities, including the local church. May we all know more the love of our Heavenly Father.
