Driving back to Corpus Christi from Dallas several years ago, I felt I needed to drive by an ex-boyfriend’s house. Not knowing why, I headed to the neighborhood. No harm in that. As I got closer, I sensed God telling me to stop and ring the doorbell.

Driving by was one thing, but I didn’t have any intentions of stopping. I had broken up with him and just knew his family was mad at me. As I drove by the house the first time, the impression only grew stronger. I drove around the block fighting with God.

The second time around the block, I argued:  “I don’t even remember his sister’s name!”

A pause ensued, basically for me to be quiet, and then I heard, “Beth.”

Knowing I heard clearly from God, I sat at the stop sign with a choice to make. One way led back to Corpus Christi and the other way led back to my ex-boyfriend’s house. More honestly, one road lead to obedience and the other to disobedience.

Fearful of disobeying and missing being part of what God wanted to do, I turned around and drove back to the house. Trembling, I waited for someone to answer the door.

As the door opened, I stuttered to reintroduce myself, but was quickly invited in with open arms. His parents were just sitting down to dinner, and they invited me to join them. It just happened, Beth was there, too.

A few weeks later I realized something I didn’t know at the time. Beth had returned to her relationship with the Lord and started attending a church in Austin with a Master’s Commission, an intense discipleship and ministry training program for young adults.  Her parents were uneasy about her starting this program, but when I came and shared how I had been in Dallas visiting with someone about a Master’s Commission that gave them peace. They blessed her decision to go.

As I read through Ephesians today, I was reminded of this story and the need to trust and follow Him with all that we are, especially when we feel inadequate. In our weakness, He can most shine through.

What is God asking you to do that you feel unqualified, underresourced, or scared to do? Humble yourself before the Lord and give it to Him. He can do more than you expect or imagine as you allow Him to live and work through you.

 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ  (Ephesians 1:3 NLT).
