Come Here

Nehemias

Walking through the clinic, I heard Nehemias say, “Jennifer, where is my walker?”

What?  Walker?  Then I remembered.  Flash back to a few weeks earlier when I promised he could take a walker home if he could walk with it safely.   Since his first time to come see us, nearly five years ago, we hoped he would walk with a walker, but he just didn’t have the strength, balance and coordination to do so safely.

Still trying to gather my thoughts, I found a walker.  “Let’s see how you do,” I said as I handed it to him.  Immediately he started walking, but this time with the coordination, control and strength to do it alone and safely He showed no signs that he might fall.

“It looks good to me. What do you think, Shesita?”  I asked.

“Looks good to me, too,” replied Shesita.

Nehemias’ face beamed with joy, and his father had a smile from ear to ear.  Nehemias would finally go home with a walker.  But first, he had to get out the door.

“Jennifer, come here,” called Nehemias again.

He pointed to the door, so I opened it.  Smiling and looking back to see who was watching him, he walked out the door and down the path to return home.  Who knows what other doors of opportunity will open up for him to walk through now.
