Walk into the therapy program at ASELSI in Chichicastenango any Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday and you will see our rehabilitation promoters working with patients of all ages. On the surface, you’ll see them getting the therapy services they need, but if you dig deeper you’ll discover much more. 

You’ll see rehabilitation promoters serving out of love, not pity or obligation or the desire for a paycheck. You’ll notice the special connections created through the intentional building of relationships by our staff with their patients and families. You’ll discover the hand of God at work in many ways.

Last week, Sara came in for her therapy session. Sara started coming to see us just after her mom died. The loss impacted the whole family, but especially Sara. A teacher, Sara’s mom paid attention to Sara’s special needs and worked hard to teach Sara all she could. With the loss of Sara’s mom, the family didn’t know what to do and started coming to see us. 

We all have a different, unique relationship with Sara. I remember the weeks she’d come in having finished a lollipop. I’d be greeted with sticky hugs and kisses. Last year, during the Independence Day Parade, promenading with the children from Jesus’ Little Lamb School who are also part of ASELSI, Sara was the queen of the parade. Nervous to be on the float alone, she constantly looked out to Shesita, our Guatemalan PT, and others to calm her nerves.

Last week, I happened to be in the clinic when Sara arrived for her therapy. We all got our hug, handshake, or special greeting before she started her therapy.  Our rehabilitation promoter noticed Sara struggled to perform one of her exercises correctly and asked for help. Shesita went over to help, and I caught it on video, see below.

This simple interaction reminded me of the joy and privilege it is to train local rehabilitation promoters. Our rehabilitation promoters may not have a formal education, but they have a heart to serve. They work with love, compassion, and devotion. When I see them interact with Sara and others, I see God’s love and grace shining through them and I’m delighted for this opportunity to work with so many.
