I Like Cheese and Tuna Sandwiches
This week we continue our blog series sharing some of the different tools we use to train our rehabilitation promoters. I thought I’d share how we start off a new section. Each new section is introduced with a story or activity to set the stage for what is to come.
For example, before talking about patient’s rights, confidentiality, and modesty, we provide the following story:
I heard the story of a nurse working in another country. A woman was having difficulty with the birth of her child. The nurse knew the struggling mother needed more help than she could provide and quickly rushed the mother to the local government hospital. Upon arrival, the doctor started examining her in the middle of the waiting room. He began lifting her skirt without explaining what he was going to do or attempting to keep her covered. Nervously the mother squirmed but without notice from the doctor. He continued doing what he felt needed to be done in the middle of the waiting area, while the other people in the waiting area could observe and listen to everything going on. She attempted to speak, but fear and shock kept her from being able to express her concerns or ask any questions.
Or before we started talking about communication, we played the telephone game. The sentence we try to pass form one person to another is: I like cheese and tuna sandwiches. It is always interesting to see what comes out at the end.
