God knew
After spending most of the year in the book of Ephesians, I’ve recently returned to the Old Testament. I love the truths found in both the Old and New Testaments and how we need both to fully understand God and His ways, but I digress.
After reading through the book of Joshua, I felt a need to go back and look at the lessons of leadership learned by Moses that impacted Joshua’s leadership. As I started reading through the book of Exodus, I found myself coming back to a verse in chapter 2. The last verse of the chapter says, “God saw the people of Israel-and God knew” (Exodus 2:25 ESV).
What did God know? The next chapters describe what God knew. God knew all that happened to His people after the death of Joseph, especially after the appointment of new king of Egypt that did not know Joseph. God saw it all. He saw their persecution, their forced labor, the killing of their sons, and more. He also saw their cries for help. God knew.
He knew, but He did not respond right away. He watched as the people continued to cry out and suffer under the Pharaoh, but He was at work. He knew. He knew in time He would send Moses to set His people free and lead them out of their slavery and out of Egypt.
God knew. God knows. He is not distant and uncaring, but He may not work in the time or way we would like. When it feels as if our world is falling apart, He knows. When we struggle with the loss of a loved one, an unexpected diagnosis, a constant illness, the loss of a job, or an unexpected transfer, He knows. Whatever circumstances we find ourselves in today, we can trust the He knows. He has a plan and is at work. Will we trust and follow Him or will we resist and fight?
Today, I find comfort that He knows. He is at work and I can trust Him. This encourages me to continue to look to Him, trusting and following Him. How about you? Let’s keep looking to and trusting in the One who knows all things and holds all things in His hands.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6 ESV).
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand (Psalm 121:1-5 NIV).
